Feb 2028
proposed shutoff of old signals in the 55 largest markets (not yet adopted)

The short version

  1. Local stations are moving from the TV standard every antenna TV uses today (ATSC 1.0) to a new one (ATSC 3.0, sold as “NextGen TV”). The two are not compatible.
  2. Right now stations must keep sending the old signal too, so nothing has gone dark. That rule runs through July 17, 2027.
  3. Broadcasters have asked the FCC to let them shut the old signal off in the 55 largest markets in February 2028 and everywhere else in February 2030. The FCC is expected to decide by the end of 2026.
  4. Most TVs sold before 2024 cannot receive the new signal. When your market switches, you’ll need a TV with a 3.0 tuner or a converter box (about $90–$200). Unlike the 2009 switch, there is currently no federal coupon program.
